Ioannis Verykokidis was born on January 15, 1962, in Inia, Heraklion, Crete. He completed his secondary education in Piraeus and studied Management at the University of West Attica in Egaleo. He holds a master's degree in Management from the Hellenic Open University, while his involvement in art has been entirely self-taught.
He began painting in his childhood out of pure enjoyment, though he never formally cultivated his natural inclination toward the arts. His first steps in art were guided by his father, who was also a self-taught sculptor. Together, they created murals and sculptures, drawing inspiration from the Minoan era—a period that had always fascinated him. Their works depicted stories, figures, and scenes from the ancient Minoan civilization, capturing its unique aesthetics and aura of mystery.
Later, he put aside art to focus on his studies and professional career. He returned to Crete, settling in Chania, where he still resides today. There, he married and had two daughters.
Although he always sought opportunities to nurture his artistic aspirations, circumstances never allowed it. In the past five years, he has also been working with mosaic art, constantly exploring new means of expression. During this artistic journey, he discovered an original technique: creating mosaics using rice and, occasionally, legumes. Initially, the Minoan era once again served as his primary inspiration, but over time, his themes have expanded. History, nature, emotions, and female figures remain constant sources of inspiration in his work.
His art reflects his thoughts and emotions, exuding a sense of tranquility and purity. Through his creations, he seeks simplicity in expression, aiming to evoke an inner sense of peace in the viewer. His continuous exploration and experimentation with different materials and techniques form the core of his artistic journey, reaffirming his dedication to art as a medium of communication and personal expression.
